Why you need to include your neck and décolletage in your skincare routine

When it comes to skincare, we can be so focused on our faces that we forget to keep going south, but the neck and décolletage are areas that can really benefit from some regular TLC. The skin on the neck is thinner than on the face and has less sebaceous glands, so it’s extra important to keep this area hydrated and nourished. Meanwhile, the décolletage - the area between the neck and breasts – is frequently on show yet often neglected from our daily skincare regimes.

Don’t neglect the neck

Writer and Filmmaker Nora Ephron famously wrote a humorous essay entitled ‘I feel bad about my neck’ – well worth a read - which discussed the way our necks age us. Here at Willowberry our philosophy is not to feel bad about our necks; yes, they will show the signs of age as we get older, but that’s ok. It’s natural. The neck’s thinner, less oily skin can mean that lines often appear on the neck sooner than on the face and, combined with all the muscle movement, the skin starts to sag over time.

What we can do is to nourish and care for the skin on our necks to make sure it looks the best it can, just as we treat our faces in this way. Make sure you opt for a nourishing cleanser when you wash your face, and take it all the way down to your neck instead of stopping at your jaw line. The same goes for your moisturiser, to keep the neck hydrated and the skin soft, smooth and supple. When applying your moisturiser, don’t stop at the neck, either! Keeping on going to the decolletage…

De-what? De-where?

The décolletage (or décolleté) refers to the area between the neck and the breasts. We literally look out over this part of us and so it’s perhaps not surprising that it is often overlooked in our skincare routines. In a kind of no wo/man’s land between face and body, the décolletage can miss out on both our face and body routines. Simply carry on applying your moisturiser right down to this area at the same time as you are doing your face each day. It takes hardly any extra time and by doing this you will keep the skin nourished, hydrated, smooth and looking its best.

Best for grown-up skin

Here are our recommendations for how to show some daily love for your face-neck-décolletage:

Start with Willowberry Nutrient Boost Cleansing Balm with rosehip, chia seed and vitamin E. Full of vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids it melts away dirt and impurities to leave skin cleansed and nourished.

Next, moisturise and add glow with Willowberry Nutrient Boost Day Cream. Along with rosehip, chia seed and vitamin E, it also contains hydrating hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to plump, smooth and protect the skin.

All the skin-boosting ingredients in our Willowberry range will help to repair your skin’s protective barrier and keep your face, neck and décolletage nourished, soothed and comforted.

Don’t forget the SPF

One important point to note is that we should routinely be applying SPF to the neck and décolletage as often as we apply it to our faces. These areas are in particular danger of exposure to sun damage and it’s too easy to forget to include them in our daily SPF routine. Get into the healthy habit of wearing an SPF of at least 30 on your face, the whole of your neck (don’t forget the back!) and the top of your chest, as well as any other exposed areas of the body.
