When it comes to health, fitness and wellbeing, often the motivations behind our efforts are led by the noticeable results that follow, i.e. gaining more energy, losing weight, toning up, feeling calmer, or whatever the desired outcomes may be.
But we should also be thinking of our future self when considering our self-care; planning long-term goals to reap the benefits year after year. It can be hard to think beyond immediate results, but by caring about the long-term you are creating a good foundation to stick to your habits for good. It will also be far easier to maintain good habits as you go through life, rather than trying to introduce new habits to counteract health niggles further down the line.
I’m 35 and I am conscious of looking after my future 60 year old self (and beyond), by eating healthily to help minimise the risk of serious illness later in life; by exercising to keep the body moving in the way it should; and by striving to maintain a healthy balance in life to keep the mind and body performing at its best.
10 years, 20 years, 30 years, 40 years… it may all seem a long way off, but cherish the older version of you now by nurturing your present self every day. Your future self will thank you for it.
