what do face oils do for the skin?

5 ways a face oil will improve your complexion

Oils have been used for thousands of years in beauty - there is archaeological evidence that the Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Greeks used them to cleanse and moisturise. Those ancients knew a thing or two about how to look after their skin; there is a lot of goodness in the plant oils that Mother Nature offers.

A face oil is a great multi-tasker to add into your skincare routine – here are 5 ways a face oil will improve your complexion:

  1. Regulate oily skin by balancing out sebum production. While it may seem counter-intuitive to use an oil on oily skin, a face oil works wonders by signalling to the skin that it has enough oil and doesn’t need to produce more.

In our Willowberry Nutrient Boost Face Oil, grapeseed oil hydrates while being light on skin, rosehip oil helps support cell regeneration and the production of collagen and elastin, and chia seed oil brings a powerhouse of vitamins.

  1. Moisturise, hydrate and nourish dry skin without leaving any greasy residue. For skin that is particularly dehydrated, apply a couple of drops of face oil alongside your moisturiser. As well as using in your daytime skincare routine, using a face oil at night is a pleasurable (and easy) way to hydrate while you sleep. Press a couple of drops into the skin, breathe in the scent and relax…

Alongside nourishing plant oils, our Willowberry Nutrient Boost Face Oil formula also combines essential oils of geranium and coriander seed, for a beautiful natural spa scent.

  1. Make skin smoother and more radiant by protecting the skin’s barrier function to increase moisture retention, elasticity and softness. Our skin has a natural barrier to help keep in moisture and to protect it from external aggressors such as pollution and bacteria. Excessive use of harsh products can strip this protective layer but gently nourishing formulas, such as a good face oil, can help to maintain it.

The vitamin E in our Willowberry face oils (100% natural from wheat germ) is a powerful antioxidant which strengthens the skin’s barrier while helping to fight skin-damaging free radicals.

  1. Help reduce scars and hyperpigmentation with regular use. Treating your skin with a nourishing face oil can, over time, help fade the appearance of scars and pigmentation. Especially when combined with facial massage. Stimulating the blood flow while at the same time delivering skin soothing, plumping and regenerating ingredients can help to even out the texture and tone of your skin.

The chia seed oil in our Willowberry Sensitive Face Oil and Willowberry Nutrient Boost Face Oil aids skin regeneration and helps reduce both redness and inflammation, while vitamin E stimulates skin cell production and aids skin repair (including scars).

  1. Add glow… because face oil is basically liquid radiance. Particularly in the case of mature skin, which can start to become duller over time, face oil is your secret super-power. Consider it your glow in a bottle. It’s great massaged into the skin under make-up, or used over make-up as a highlighter; simply pat a drop or two of face oil along the tops of cheekbones. The effect is as flattering as good lighting: it makes you look lit-from-within healthy, glowing not glittery.

Supersize the benefits with massage

Face oil lends itself perfectly to facial massage. All the above benefits can be increased by using your face oil together with massage to boost blood circulation and work the oil into the skin.

Choosing a face oil

When choosing a facial oil, look for a good-quality, plant-based face oil bursting with skin-loving vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids. One with a lightweight formulation is ideal, as it will sink into your skin faster and more easily. You don’t need to use a lot: a few drops is usually plenty.

Our Willowberry Nutrient Boost Face Oil combines rosehip, chia seed and grapeseed oils with vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids in an ultra-light, quickly absorbed formula. It is also available in a Sensitive Face Oil version which has the same gently nourishing formula as the original but without any essential oils, for the most delicate skins.
